Brad Hawthorne offers some helpful advice for finding and catching early summer walleye and smallmouth bass during the post-spawn period, as they dump out into deeper water with water temperatures on the rise.

This time of year is a tricky one and many anglers struggle to follow fish as they make their transition to deeper water. It’s not uncommon during this period of time to see multiple species holding in the same area before they spread out into the abyss and vast areas of open water.

Anglers can use a variety of techniques to catch walleye and smallmouth bass, but bouncing the bottom with jigs and plastics is always a favorite. The unique thing about the Northland Rippin’ Minnow is the molded plastic fins that give it a side to side darting action unlike a standard jighead which draws an aggressive response even when fish aren’t actively feeding.

The Rippin’ Minnow comes pre-rigged with the perfect plastic so there’s no need to worry about rigging a bait wrong or having the wrong size plastic. You know you’re getting a perfect match right out of the package. Shallow water areas call for a lighter presentation and deeper water calls for a heavier look to keep bottom contact.
