Smallmouth bass caught on a UV Mimic Minnow

Bemidji, Minn. – Northland Fishing Tackle’s wildly popular Mimic Minnow is now deadlier than ever for all species of gamefish, thanks to new optically brightened, high-vis UV colors that catch and reflect the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

“UV-enhanced finishes make it easier for fish to see the lure, even in dirty water,” says veteran guide and Team Northland® pro-staffer Chip Leer. A former skeptic, Leer says extensive on-the-water testing made him a believer in the power of UV-brightened baits to catch more fish.

Experiments by Leer and fellow Team Northland® pros including decorated tournament champion Scott Glorvigen have proven that, like glow-in-the-dark finishes, there’s a time and place where UV has the most impact. “I’ve enjoyed the most success with UV baits during daylight hours when algae blooms, suspended sediments, or other factors reduced predators’ ability to see prey,” Leer says.

UV coatings work by gathering and reflecting ambient ultraviolet light to brighten lure colors and attract nearby gamefish. “UV finishes are a plus in shallow water during low-light periods, in stained water, and in deep water as well,” Glorvigen adds. “Optical enhancements to the fish-catching Mimic Minnow family give anglers even more options for using these standout swimbaits to put fish in the boat.”

The UV Mimic Minnow features a lifelike soft-plastic body that imitates shad and other deep-bodied baitfish, along with a hard-thumping, hyperactive paddle tail that throbs and shakes even at slow speeds.

It comes pre-rigged on a realistic, true-swimming baitfish head and is available in 1/32-, 1/16-, 1/8-, 1/4- and 3/8-ounce sizes perfect for panfish, walleyes, bass, trout, and pike. Look for six high-vis UV color patterns. MSRP per two rigged baits ranges from $3.19 to $4.09 depending on size.
