Methods & Techniques

Northland Knows Best.
Here’s some of our favorite methods & techniques.

CASTING

This method allows fishermen to effectively fish shallow water areas without spooking the fish. It works especially well in and around weeds, shallow flats, bars, rock reefs and in river systems. It is very popular for fishing jigs, fishing rigs and artificial plugs for Walleye, Bass, Northern Pike and Muskie.

CONTROLLED DRIFT

Used in conjunction with contour trolling. It is merely using the motor to keep the boat on course while the wind moves the craft down a piece of structure. Works well when working over large flats and gradual shoreline drop-offs.

ANCHOR FISHING

This method of anchoring a boat or fishing from a stationary position works well when a super slow presentation is necessary. The technique of fishing directly under the boat or casting out and retrieving works best when fish are in shallow water or pin-pointed in a very small area.

CONTOUR TROLLING

This is a method of controlled boat handling. With this system of forward or backtrolling against the wind, a fisherman can systematically work sharp drop-offs, contour breaks, and all types of structure at a precise depth level with complete boat control.

DOCK/SHORE FISHING

Many public fishing piers have been built in recent years on strategic shoreline locations that can be extremely productive. Prime shore fishing locations include areas near boat canals, river inlets, shoreline drop-offs, bridges, docks, weedbeds and boat landings.

The key to dock and shore fishing success is finding fish-holding structure areas like weedbeds, submerged brush, stumps, holes, drop-offs & current from rivers & creeks. One of the most productive techniques is to quietly wade the shoreline and cast to these structure areas.

Kids love dock & shore fishing. Keep it simple, safe & fun!
